Support for Recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake
We at the Recruit Group express our sincere condolences to all those affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake and our adamant hope for the quick recovery of the disaster-affected regions.
The Recruit Group is providing ongoing support in coordination with people in affected areas to assist them in their efforts to achieve an independent recovery.
Areas of support
The Recruit Group is carrying out support activities in the following three areas. As a company that helps shape local communities, we are making whatever contributions we can to the disaster recovery effort.
1. An Eye on the Future of Tohoku's Communities
The March 11, 2011, Great East Japan Earthquake dealt a severe blow to Tohoku residents' lives. Four years later, the Recruit Group is committed to helping their communities recover and thrive as a company that shapes local communities through its products and services.
In 2013 Recruit joined the Tohoku Future Creation Initiative, a platform for joint public-private-sector activities. In the city of Kamaishi, Iwate Prefecture, these activities include working groups that aim to reinvent Kamaishi as a vibrant "open city" over the next quarter-century.
Sou Takafuji, a Recruit Holdings employee assisting the Initiative since 2015, describes what Kamaishi has done toward this target. "The city first held open-house meetings to gather residents' views. Participants decided to create ways for young people to come together and build the community they wanted to live in. And this led to immediate action." Nine projects, with some 350 participants in all, are now creating a vision of the community, residents, and jobs that will support the city in 2040.
Kamaishi expects its population to grow smaller and grayer through 2040. To confront these demographics, a group of city officials under age 35 and a young citizens' working group are defining the challenges Kamaishi faces in the areas of work, education, marriage and child-rearing, and attracting new residents. "Members begin with the ideal image of Kamaishi in 2040 and use backcasting to determine what they must do today," says Takafuji. "At Recruit, I found this method an excellent way to discuss the issues in broader context and take more positive approaches to them."
The Initiative is tackling issues that go beyond Tohoku, making it a valuable undertaking for all of Japan's regions facing similar challenges. Through our contributions, we hope to make this a more broad-based movement inspiring action across Tohoku and throughout the nation.
2. Relief funding and donations
In addition to giving support through products and services and encouraging staff to participate in volunteer activities, the Recruit Group has also offered monetary donations and contributions.
In the immediate aftermath of the disaster, funds from the Recruit Group and contributions collected from employees and people who use our services were donated to the Japanese Red Cross to assist the rescue and relief efforts. We also donated funds to the prefectural governments of Iwate, Miyagi, Fukushima, and Ibaraki to help disaster victims in these prefectures rebuild their lives as soon as possible.

3. Volunteer activities
In August 2011, we introduced a system allowing employees to take leave to participate in volunteer activities and covering a portion of the incurred expenses. To give even greater support to employees' volunteerism, we began organizing special volunteer tours for employees in September 2011.
