Solving society's problems for a brighter tomorrow: How we create services that will play key roles in the next ten years
MTL (Media Technology Lab) makes use of the Recruit Group's many services and media projects to cultivate new enterprises and groundbreaking innovations from a technological perspective.
MTL was originally the place within the group for developing new business opportunities, original apps, and conducting test runs. As the business environment surrounding the Recruit Group diversified, we also saw greater opportunities to put new creations into practice. We took advantage of this climate to establish an internal startup-like setting that featured the same competitive principles at play in the marketplace. MTL now supports new services as a section of the group that constantly accepts ideas for new business plans and promotes growth through innovation.
Applying strong willpower and assets to consistently produce new value
For over 30 years now the Recruit Group has been holding "New RING", a new business development contest that accepts entries from all of our employees. MTL manages "Recruit Ventures", a program for cultivating the ideas drafted in the New RING contest, and then acting as an organization for building the new businesses born there up from scratch.
Many of the services offered by the Recruit Group are closely connected to people's lives. It's only natural that the core value of these services is their ability to pinpoint and resolve issues facing our clients and their customers. This DNA permeates the entirety of the group, so more than a few of our team members are driven by a desire to make even greater contributions to society or improve industries as a whole. In that sense you could say that it was a must that we have a place where we can take the initiative in crafting new business ideas like we do with Recruit Ventures. That said, producing truly valuable services is no easy task. If our goal was to simply bring in greater revenue then it may be quicker to acquire pre-existing companies.
The fact that we have a section like MTL within the group for supporting new ventures goes to show that we value the will and wishes of everyone from our executives to our youngest team members. Trying out innovations that, while perhaps inefficient, arise from a sincere drive or desire to solve society's problems has a greater chance of producing new, unbeatable value. Another advantage is our ability to make use of existing assets within the group, such as our carefully cultivated environment for releasing services and our sales structure. With this background and the determination of the minds behind these new ideas, I have no doubt that we can create businesses that are truly worth pursuing. We at the MTL will continue to deliver services that will be useful to the Recruit Group and the world even 10 years down the road.

Solving problems faced by hardware startups
One of the most iconic products or services MTL has been involved in is "Brain Portal", which helps solve problems faced by hardware startups. Thanks to the spread of 3D printers for easy production of prototypes and crowd funding in recent years, there has been a sudden surge in the number of startups in many areas from the Internet of Things and robotics to healthcare, space technology, and energy.
But, even if a startup succeeds in securing funding, they may face other issues such as a design that doesn't produce a mold sufficient for mass production or an inability to pass standard certifications needed to ship. The result is that most hardware startups face delays in launching their products. They also have to deal with other issues in bringing their creations to the marketplace such as lacking the resources for packaging, manuals, or after-sales service, as well as complications in progress control. In order to ease these concerns, Brain Portal created a service that matches hardware startups with experts using network of specialists like ODM/OEM makers, designers, engineers, consultants, and researchers in Japan and Asia.
Brain Portal started with just two people, but thanks to the support of MTL its reach has expanded into previously inaccessible areas and now tackles projects with a team of over 10 members that includes those in manufacturing, veterans from major makers, and system engineers, not to mention other subcontractors. Brain Portal has been able to bring about positive results by approaching their service from an objective viewpoint through periodic mentoring and monitoring.
Supporting consistent growth through a stage-gate process
We generally work alongside those drafting new ventures in coming up with strategies and business models, but as necessary MTL will also support growth by adding personnel, materials, or funding in accordance with our original stage-gate process of MVP, Seed, Alpha, and Beta.
Proposals that make it past the judges at Recruit Ventures will undergo preparations during the MVP stage before heading into Seed, where they will actually be released as premium services in order to hammer out some initial proceeds. If the drafters are handling the product development on their own then we will also help them with product or project management, as well as identifying what type of marketing or scale points they need in order to expand sales. In Alpha we work to take these scale points to the action phase by providing support for creating systems or putting KPI management in place in order to reach definite targets. Beta is an extension of this in that we help ventures consider mid-to-long-term plans with an eye towards going independent of MTL and becoming proper departments or subsidiaries.
Brain Portal is a business born of Recruit Ventures that originated with an idea for a simple matching service that connected engineers looking for work with companies offering jobs. But, over the course of many discussions and repeated expansions of its range of activity, we began to touch upon the real nature of the problems many hardware startups were facing, and this in turn shed light upon the true implications of the service. In short, what is really important to the originators of Brain Portal is resolving these issues, and so we here at MTL have responded in kind in order to incubate their service and help it thrive. This stance is part of the core DNA of the Recruit Group, and we believe there is real meaning in continuing to take on challenges that could lead to fresh value.

MTL utilizes the accumulated knowledge and personnel of the Recruit Group to provide ongoing backing to new services and groundbreaking innovations that will enrich the world. Each day the lab evaluates new ideas, and in the days to come it will actively seek out the participation of our staff in addition to awaiting proposals. This will allow MTL to sow seeds that could lead to development even without set ideas, and experiment even further with increasing the Recruit Group's ability to produce and implement innovations and ventures. MTL will also make inroads into previously unexplored sectors like healthcare, medicine, or sports in order to make contributions to these industries and society as a whole.
Of course, MTL must also make reasonable judgment calls about ideas that may be socially relevant but will not work well as businesses. Despite this, the lab will continue to be thorough in finding and supporting what truly needs to be done to resolve society's problems without being swayed by business trends. MTL shall always take up the challenge of bringing new value to the Recruit Group in the years to come.
